We’re excited to introduce a new feature in Lyssna: Randomization.

This feature is designed to strengthen your research by reducing bias and providing more reliable results.

The order you present questions in surveys or following usability test tasks can affect the responses your participants give. To mitigate this bias, you can randomize the order that questions are displayed so that each participant receives them in a different sequence.

Let’s dive into the benefits and explore how randomization works in Lyssna.

What are the benefits of randomization?

Randomizing questions in research studies and usability tests offers several key benefits:

  • Reducing order effects: The order that questions are displayed can affect how people answer them – this is called an order effect. To make sure that everyone’s answers are equally valid, you can randomize the order of the questions. This way, you can be sure that the order of the questions doesn't bias the results.

  • Mitigating bias: Randomizing the order of questions helps to reduce any unfair advantages or disadvantages that could come from grouping questions by topic or difficulty. By spreading these advantages and disadvantages equally among participants, the research results are more accurate.

  • Increasing data variability: Randomizing the order of questions can make participants’ answers more varied. This can give you more information and a better understanding of your users' experiences.

How randomization works in Lyssna

Randomization in Lyssna

In Lyssna, you can randomize the order choices are displayed for single-choice, multiple-choice, and ranking questions. Now, you also have the option to randomize the order in which questions are presented in each section of the test, offering greater flexibility in the design of your study.

For example, if you’re conducting a survey or asking follow-up questions to a card sort, first click test, five second test, navigation test, preference test, prototype test, or tree test, you can randomize the order in which those questions are displayed in that section of the test. This feature lets you mix up the order of questions, while still keeping the overall survey or test in a specific order.

To enable this feature, simply select the “Randomize the order of questions” checkbox when setting up your test. Each participant will then receive a randomized sequence of questions, ensuring fairness and integrity in your research process.

When viewing your results, you’ll find your questions displayed in the order you saved them, with a notification indicating that the question order was randomized. If you drill down to each participant, you’ll see the sequence in which they answered each question.
